Log

In the Logs section, Smart Update Monitor records important events related to update monitoring.

The logs help you track completed checks and identify potential problems with automatic monitoring.

What are logs used for?

Smart Update Monitor often runs automatically in the background. In particular, when checks are performed using a Joomla Scheduled Task, you may not directly notice when they are executed.

The logs therefore allow you to check later whether and when an update check was performed.

They are particularly useful if you want to:

  • verify that automatic checks are being performed,
  • investigate problems with a Scheduled Task,
  • trace errors that occurred during an update check,
  • check when Smart Update Monitor was last active.

Logged information

The log entries contain information about the operations performed by Smart Update Monitor.

Depending on the operation, information such as the time, result, or status of a check may be stored.

This gives you a chronological overview of the most important activities performed by Smart Update Monitor.

Manual checks

Checks started by clicking Check Now on the dashboard can also be tracked in the logs.

This is useful, for example, if you perform a new check after changing the configuration and then want to verify that it was completed successfully.

Automatic checks

The logs are particularly useful for automatic checks performed using Joomla Scheduled Tasks.

If the last check displayed on the dashboard is not being updated, you can use the logs to verify whether Smart Update Monitor was executed at all.

If no corresponding entries appear for an extended period, you should check the Scheduled Task configuration and make sure the Joomla Scheduler is being executed correctly.

Investigating errors

If a problem occurs during monitoring, the stored log information may provide clues about the cause.

Depending on the problem, you should also check the following areas:

  • Update Sites for problems with update sources,
  • Scheduled Tasks if automatic checks are not being performed,
  • Settings for notification-related problems,
  • Joomla's Global Configuration for email delivery problems.

Smart Update Monitor logs and Joomla logs

The Smart Update Monitor logs focus on events within the extension itself.

For technical errors, Joomla's log files or your web server's error logs may provide additional useful information.

In particular, if you encounter PHP errors, server problems, or failed background processes, you should also check these logs if necessary.

Checking the logs regularly

During normal operation, it is not necessary to check the logs every day.

However, checking them occasionally can be useful to make sure that automatic update monitoring is running as expected.

If you are receiving email notifications and the last check on the dashboard is being updated regularly, you will normally only need to view the logs when troubleshooting a problem.

Logs for support requests

If you experience a problem while using Smart Update Monitor, the log information may also be useful when submitting a support request.

Describe as precisely as possible when the problem occurred and whether it happened during a manual or automatic check. Relevant log entries can help with troubleshooting.
