Smart Update Monitor can automatically notify you by email about the update status of your Joomla website.
Combined with automatic checks using Joomla Scheduled Tasks, this means you do not have to regularly open the administrator area just to check whether new updates are available.
Enable email notifications
Email notifications are configured in the Settings of Smart Update Monitor.
There you can specify whether notifications should be sent and which email addresses should receive them.
For notifications to be delivered successfully, email sending must be correctly configured on your Joomla website.
Notification content
The notification summarizes the results of the update monitoring process and informs you about relevant available updates.
Depending on the results of the check, the notification may contain information about different types of updates, including:
- Joomla Core updates
- Component updates
- Plugin updates
- Module updates
- Template updates
- Language pack updates
This gives you a quick overview of whether any action is required for the website.
Ignored updates
Updates that you intentionally ignore in Smart Update Monitor are no longer considered relevant during future checks.
This prevents updates that you have deliberately decided not to install for the time being from generating further notifications.
If you want to monitor an ignored update again later, you can remove its ignored status at any time.
Automatic notifications
Email notifications are particularly useful when combined with a Scheduled Task.
The Scheduled Task automatically starts the update check. Smart Update Monitor then evaluates the retrieved information and can send a notification according to your configuration.
This allows the monitoring process to run in the background without requiring you to manually open the component.
Notifications for multiple websites
If you manage multiple Joomla websites, you can configure Smart Update Monitor separately on each installation and have the notifications sent to the same email address.
This allows you to automatically receive information about available updates even if you do not regularly log in to the administrator area of every website.
This is particularly useful for administrators, web designers, and agencies managing multiple Joomla installations.
Not receiving an email?
If an expected notification does not arrive, check the following:
- Are email notifications enabled in Smart Update Monitor?
- Is the configured recipient address correct?
- Is email sending working correctly on your Joomla website?
- Was the update check actually performed?
- Could the message have been blocked or moved to a spam folder?
You can also check the Logs to verify whether the corresponding update check was performed.
Check your Joomla email configuration
Smart Update Monitor uses your Joomla website's email configuration to send notifications.
If other Joomla emails are also not being delivered reliably, check your website's email settings under System → Global Configuration → Server.
Depending on your hosting environment, using an SMTP account may be more reliable than sending email through the PHP mail function.
Notifications do not replace regular maintenance
Email notifications help you identify new updates at an early stage. However, they do not replace regular maintenance of your Joomla website.
Before installing important updates, you should still create a current backup and, if necessary, check the compatibility of your installed extensions.
